In Audit We Trust
Public records access

A public records transparency project.

In Audit We Trust requests public records from California state and local agencies under the California Public Records Act.

How it works

How a records request works

1

Request

We file a formal request under the California Public Records Act for records held by a state or local agency.

2

Release

The agency reviews the request and provides the records that are subject to disclosure, with any required redactions.

3

Review

We review what the agency provides and confirm the request has been fully and accurately answered.

For records officers

If your agency was asked to provide records for an open request, the simplest way to send them is the secure upload link included in your correspondence with us.

  • Files of any size — body-worn camera footage, audio, photos, documents.
  • Uploads resume automatically if the connection is interrupted.
  • Nothing to install and no account to create.

Need a new link, or prefer to send the records another way? Reply to your request email and we'll work with you.

About the law

The California Public Records Act gives the public the right to inspect and obtain copies of records held by state and local agencies, subject to limited exemptions.

Senate Bills 1421 and 16 expanded access to certain peace-officer records — including body-worn camera recordings of critical incidents — recognizing the public's strong interest in transparency and accountability.

California Government Code § 7920 et seq.; Penal Code § 832.7.
